Have you ever wondered who owns a certain web domain name (say for example yahoo.com)? Turns out that in many cases you can get that information by querying the whois database. Note that many domain name registrar also offer whois lookups. Beware: if you are looking for your own domain they will see you querying it, and might register it before you can get it in order to sell it back to you at a premium (only a few registrar are rumored to do this, but its best to avoid their websites for domain name searches).
